We hosted our 2nd Blue Ridge training camp over the weekend and it was a lot of fun. This is an essentially unadvertised camp that Bri and I put together for our athletes, friends and training partners and it is billed as a train and have fun camp, not a train and then talk more about training and sit for lectures on training then go to sleep so you can train more camp, which also have their time and place, just not here.
We rent a large house on the side of a mountain and then fill it up with food, people, and adult beverages.
Thursday ride - 47 miles with 4,000 feet elevation gain + The Viaduct
Thursday run - 5 miles flat on Boone Greeneways (these are nice if you're ever in the area)
Friday ride - ~40 miles, with washout bridge crossing, 3,500 feet elevation + Shoals Mill pass
Friday swim - between 3,000 to 5,000 meters
Saturday run - up from Bass Lake to Moses Cone Park to the Firetower - 1,100 feet elevation gain in ~5 mile climb
Saturday swim - stormed out, we did try to get this in but not too many complaints
Saturday night - brawling with the Roller Derby girls (here is one happy camper before he was tackled to the ground by seven sweaty roller girls)
Sunday morning - ride rained out, 2.4 or 4.6 mile flat run around Julian Price Lake just off mile 296 on the Blue Ridge
Sunday cleared out by 11am
The end! Recovering from the effort this week and then the Kure Beach double sprint this weekend.

Florida racing
I am headed down to Fort Myers next weekend to run a Powerstroke clinic and am flying into and out of Tampa. My father in law brought to my attention that on Sunday at Fort Desoto in St Petersburg the Chilly Willy Duathlon is taking place. This is a 5k-10 mile bike-5k. I have just enough time to do the race, ride a bit extra, and then get to the airport, so look for me there. Fort Desoto is a nice place to race.
Two weeks after that I'll be running the Gasparilla 15k along the bay in Tampa, and the weekend after that I am running the Belleair Classic 5k.
I am taking a two week break from the cold here in NC, first a week at our winter training camp, and then a week of visiting friends and family all around the state before my FIL's wedding on March 6.
My tour of Florida (starting March 1) will turn out to be something like Sarasota - Orlando - Ormond Beach - Jacksonville - Orlando - St Pete. If you live in one of these towns and would like to set up a swim lesson, give me a shout through osbmultisport.

upcoming events
I will be giving a beginner triathlon workshop this Sunday at 11 AM at Inside-Out Sports in Cary. This is a free clinic and will last about 2 hours. You can sign up here.
If you are debating the St Pete Beach training camp from Feb 24 to March 1, we have a bedroom open in the house.
The White Lake camps are officially open. These are 2-day camps being offered through Set Up Events and hosted by us (One Step Beyond) the week of May 4-8. You can read all the info and sign up here.

good week
This week I managed:
8,300 yards swimming (2:45 hours)
20 miles running (3:30 hours)
4:45 hours riding
1 kung fu class (too wiped out to go on Friday)
a total of around 12 hours of training. Not too bad. On the ride today I completely bonked after 1.5 hours. Had to coast to the finish and then dragged Bri to Los Tres Magueyes (a great affordable Mexican restaurant here in Cary) for some calories.
Set Up Events should be announcing the White Lake training camps sometime this week.
If anyone is debating our St Pete Beach Training Camp, let me know. We have had a couple people back out and now have two open bedrooms in the beach house.
I have been in charge of picking a vacation spot for our five year anniversary in May. The plan was to make the destination a surprise for Bri, but after wrestling with the various prices and destinations, I sought her input and we settled on a cabin near Asheville. We can bring Tassie since it is pet friendly. Affordable, stuff Bri likes, the dog can go, and microbrews in Asheville. Not bad.

Blue Ridge Mountain Triathlon camp
We're hosting a triathlon camp over in the Maggie Valley area of North Carolina from August 18 thru August 24. We're staying at the Lake Logan Episcopal Center.
Coach Jeff Cuddeback (IM Hawaii record holder in 35-39, 40-44, and 45-49) has confirmed that he's coming to get in some big miles in prep for Ironman Hawaii. So if you'd like to roll a few miles in the mountains with a legend while getting ready for a late season long distance race, you might want to check this camp out. Camp fees include lodging and three meals a day. ($900 for six days, or $600 for four days)
